Wavemaker® G3 – Legacy Guided Wave Testing System

The System that Set the Standard

After more than two decades of reliable service, the Wavemaker^® G3 is now officially obsolete. First launched in 2005, the G3 marked the third generation of Guided Wave Testing (GWT) systems developed by GUL and quickly became the industry reference for long‑range pipe screening.

Its development was driven by a clear brief: create a portable, non‑intrusive screening system that delivered high‑quality, traceable results, even in the most challenging environments. The G3 delivered on that vision and more.

Industry‑Leading Innovations

At the time of its release, the G3 introduced several significant innovations in hardware and software that set new performance benchmarks:

Improved range and sensitivity, especially in noisy or attenuating environments like offshore and coated pipelines (e.g. road crossings)
Higher sampling resolution and advanced filtering for clearer signals
High‑voltage drive option for stronger signal generation
A robust, modular design for use in demanding field environments
32‑cahnnel architecture with built‑in expandability for future developments
Direct data storage within the instrument and improved USB connectivity
Enhanced electronics and built‑in diagnostics for better system reliability

The G3 proved particularly effective in buried pipe testing—helping expand the reach of Guided Wave Technology (GWT) into new sectors and geographies.

WaveProG3: Smarter Software Integration

The G3 came with WaveProG3 software, offering major enhancements in usability and productivity:

Dynamic frequency sweeping
Automatic ring detection and configuration
Cross‑sectional area loss views and ‘Unrolled Pipe’ display
Integrated GPS support
Advanced DAC prediction and mode‑converted signal detection
Built‑in result database and streamlined reporting tools

These features helped increase detection sensitivity, reduce false calls, and significantly improved inspection throughput.

End of Support

Production of the Wavemaker^® G3 ended in 2011. With spare parts now unavailable, G3 servicing and calibration are no longer supported.

The legacy of the G3 lives on in the latest generation of Wavemaker^® systems. The Wavemaker^® G5 incorporates two decades of field experience and technology evolution, delivering major advances in digital electronics, data fidelity, and field usability.

Like its predecessors (SE16, G3, G4, G4mini), the G5 is engineered for longevity. It is designed to support operators well into the future with enhanced capabilities, streamlined workflows, and broader inspection coverage. The G5 represents a performance step forward—just as the G3 did in its time.
