GUL systems can be applied on most metal pipes

The pipe type can be either Seamless or Seamed (spirally or longitudinally welded). The base pipe can be bare, lined and/or coated. (However the coating may need to be removed at the sensor location if it is more than 1mm thick or not well adhered to the pipe.)

Supported base pipe material include:

  • Carbon steel
  • Galvanized steel
  • Copper/Brass
  • Stainless steel
  • Cast Iron
  • Ductile Iron
  • Duriron
  • Aluminium
  • Titanium
  • Most other metals

Here is a non-exhaustive list of pipes that GUL Screening is applicable to:

  • ANSI / API 5L: X42 – X120 pipes for pipelines
  • ASTM A53 / ASME SA53 carbon steel pipe
  • ASTM A106 / ASME SA106 carbon steel pipe
  • ASTM A135/ ASME SA-135 Electric-Resistance-Welded (ERW) Steel Pipe
  • ASTM A312 Stainless Steel Pipe (e.g. 304/304L and 316/316L)
  • ASTM A790 Duplex and Super Duplex Pipe (e.g. UNS S32205/31803 and UNS S32750/32760)
  • ASTM A335 Alloy Pipe (e.g. P11, P22 and P91)

GUL systems are currently NOT configured to inspect pipes made entirely (coatings are OK) from:

  • Polyvinylchloride (PVC)
  • CPVC
  • Polypropylene
  • Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)
  • PEX (polyethylene cross-linked)
  • Borosilicate glass
  • Fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP)
  • MDPE/HDPE

The system and training program are not configured to detect the defect mechanisms that are applicable in these materials and most other plastics.

Please contact GUL if you need advice for a special application or special interpretation rules.
