Guided Ultrasonics Limited (GUL) was established in 1999 by members of a research team at Imperial College’s Mechanical Engineering Department and is now the global leader in guided wave pipe testing equipment, training, and services. Guided Wave Testing (GWT) has been pioneered by GUL since its incorporation, with the company playing a leading role in setting the standard for pipeline inspection and monitoring worldwide.

MANAGING DIRECTOR


Brian is currently the Managing Director of GUL, having co-founded the company in 1998. He is responsible for the overall leadership, strategy, and direction of the company, alongside oversight of its core technologies and product portfolio.
He holds a BA, BS and MS in Engineering Science from Penn State University, and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Imperial College London. A recipient of the prestigious Marshall Scholarship award, he spent a brief period studying in Lyon, France. His doctoral research at Imperial focused on the theory of Leaky Guided Waves in NDT and led to the development of the Disperse software package, which he co-wrote with Professor Mike Lowe and continues to be commercialised by the university.
Brian has authored multiple patents relating to guided wave testing theory and equipment manufacture. He is Level 3 certified in guided wave testing. He continues to play a hands‑on role in the technical direction of the business, with particular involvement in guided wave software, electronics, and product development, ensuring that GUL’s technology remains at the forefront of the industry.
Outside of work, Brian enjoys outdoor activities including diving and skiing.
R&D DIRECTOR


Thomas is an Executive Director of GUL who holds a master’s degree in Physics from RWTH Aachen, Germany, and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Imperial College London, and speaks three languages (German, Portuguese and English).
While studying for his Physics degree, he also spent one year at the University of Liverpool as part of the Erasmus Programme. His research at Imperial was related to the measurement of material properties using guided waves and since joining GUL in 2003 he has authored a patent and gained a Level 3 in guided wave testing. He is also a member of BINDT, DGZfP and the Institute of Physics.
He is currently responsible for all aspects of research & development for products and services within the company. He has and continues to supervise PhD students at Imperial College.
Thomas enjoys playing and coaching football and travelling with his family.
OPERATIONS DIRECTOR


Jimmy is an Executive Director and a Chartered Engineer who holds a master’s degree in Aeronautical Engineering and PhD in Mechanical Engineering, both from Imperial College London. His research at Imperial was related to the curvature effect of guided waves, and since joining GUL in 2005, he has authored a patent and gained a Level 3 in Guided Wave Testing. Jimmy also actively serves in the technical committees of ASTM and ASNT.
Having gained an MBA from Imperial College Business School in 2021, Jimmy is involved with a full range of technical, commercial and executive activities. His current responsibilities are to maintain and improve the efficiency of the business. In addition, Jimmy manages the company’s commitment to train and develop young undergraduate engineers, our technicians and apprentices, as well as supervising PhD students at Imperial College.
Jimmy enjoys outdoor activities with his family.

Keith is an Executive Director and holds a BEng in Aeronautical Engineering from City University, London and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Imperial College London. His research at Imperial was in ultrasonic NDT for testing adhesive joints in aerospace applications.
Since joining GUL in 2000 he has been involved in a wide range of the company’s activities including the development of guided wave instruments for testing rail, development of the gPIMS monitoring sensor and deployment of GUL’s subsea screening and monitoring capabilities. He is also GUL’s representative and technical co-ordinator on the Joint Industry Project, HOIS.
Keith likes to keep fit and has entered many triathlons, as well as the occasional games of squash, tennis and golf.

DIRECTOR


David was a co-founder of the company in 1998. He holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Imperial College London. His research at Imperial from 1987 addressed the exploitation of Lamb waves for the NDT of plate structures, followed by the pioneering foundational research on the guided wave testing of pipes. He has authored patents relating to guided wave testing equipment and was pivotal in the creation of the guided wave testing methodology, codes, standards and Level 3 certification. He has been a key driver in the global commercialisation of guided wave NDT and monitoring methods and widely recognised as a world leader in the industrial application of this technology.
David is a Director at GUL, supporting the company’s global activities with a particular focus on business development and client engagement, particularly across the Americas. He brings decades of experience in guided wave technology to support sales activities, strategic relationships, and the continued adoption of guided wave inspection and monitoring worldwide.
David enjoys football and follows his team avidly throughout the season. He also cycles, enjoys music, and values meeting people.
DIRECTOR


Tomasz is a Board Director of GUL who holds a Master and PhD in Mechanical Engineering, both from Imperial College London. His research at Imperial was related to the theoretical and experimental study of ultrasonic methods for testing adhesive joints. He was awarded SERC Fellowship for scientific achievements. Subsequent to this research Tomasz enjoyed a highly successful career in the City of London spanning over 25 years trading Money Market, Foreign Exchange, Interest Rates, Credit, derivative and structured products for some of the major global investment banks.
In 2013, he joined GUL to focus on R&D, since when he has authored patents relating to the new quantitative short range guided wave technique and manufacture of the QSR1 system. He is currently a part of the Board of Directors.
His hobbies are wide ranging, but he particularly enjoys outdoor activities such as skiing, cycling and kayaking.

Dr Eli Leinov is the Head of Client Services. Eli joined GUL in 2018 as a senior development engineer and manager of training.
Prior to joining GUL, he was a Post-Doctoral Research Associate at the NDE Group, department of Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College London. He worked on EPSRC-funded research on guided wave testing of buried and embedded pipes, as well as various NDE consultancy projects for global companies within the oil and gas, nuclear, mining and heavy machinery industries. Prior to the NDE group, he held a Post-Doctoral Research associate position at the Smart Wells Group at the department of Earth Sciences and Engineering at Imperial College London, where he worked on spontaneous electrical potentials for geophysical monitoring of water movement in the subsurface.
Eli holds a PhD, MSc and BSc in Mechanical Engineering from Ben-Gurion University, Israel. His PhD research was in the field of hydrodynamic instabilities.
Eli enjoys hiking in nature, reading and playing chess.

Fumiko joined GUL in 2023 and has worked as a service administrator, providing support across multiple departments. In her current role, she handles and resolves customer inquiries related to equipment rental and repair.
Prior to joining GUL, she gained experience in various sectors across several countries before settling in the UK.
Her motto is to stay fit and healthy; she enjoys daily workouts and cooking homegrown vegetables from her tiny backyard garden.
