Brian is the Managing Director of GUL, and was a co-founder of the company in 1998. He holds a BA, BS and MS in Engineering Science from Penn State university and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Imperial College London. Brian won a prestigious Marshall scholarship award and spent a brief period studying in Lyon, France. His research at Imperial was related to the study and theory of Leaky guided waves in NDT. The Disperse software package, which he co-wrote with Prof Lowe and is still sold by the university, was an outcome of his research. Brian has authored a number of patents relating to guided wave testing theory and equipment manufacture and is a Level 3 in guided wave testing. He is involved with all aspects of the products and services within the company, with specific responsibilities that include software, electronics and product development and he supervises a PhD student at Imperial College. Brian enjoys outdoor activities such as diving and skiing.

Thomas is an Executive Director of GUL who holds a master’s degree in Physics from RWTH Aachen, Germany, and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Imperial College London. While studying for his Physics degree, he also spent one year at the University of Liverpool as part of the Erasmus Programme. His research at Imperial was related to the measurement of material properties using guided waves and since joining GUL in 2003 he has authored a patent and gained a Level 3 in guided wave testing. He is also a member of BINDT, DGZfP and the Institute of Physics. Thomas is involved with all aspects of the products and services within the company from design and development to production and service provision. His current area of responsibility is for guided wave monitoring activities including research and development. He has and continues to supervise PhD students at Imperial College and speaks three languages (German, Portuguese and English). Thomas enjoys playing and coaching football and travelling with his family.

Jimmy is an Executive Director and a Chartered Engineer who holds a master’s degree in Aeronautical Engineering and PhD in Mechanical Engineering, both from Imperial College London. His research at Imperial was related to the curvature effect of guided waves, and since joining GUL in 2005, he has authored a patent and gained a Level 3 in Guided Wave Testing. Jimmy also actively serves in the technical committees of ASTM and ASNT. Having gained an MBA from Imperial College Business School in 2021, Jimmy is involved with a full range of technical, commercial and executive activities. His current responsibilities are to maintain and improve the efficiency of the business. In addition, Jimmy manages the company’s commitment to train and develop young undergraduate engineers, our technicians and apprentices, as well as supervising PhD students at Imperial College. Jimmy enjoys outdoor activities with his family.

Keith is an Executive Director and holds a BEng in Aeronautical Engineering from City University, London and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Imperial College London. His research at Imperial was in ultrasonic NDT for testing adhesive joints in aerospace applications. Since joining GUL in 2000 he has been involved in a wide range of the company’s activities including the development of guided wave instruments for testing rail, development of the gPIMS monitoring sensor and deployment of GUL’s subsea screening and monitoring capabilities. He is also GUL’s representative and technical co-ordinator on the Joint Industry Project, HOIS. Keith likes to keep fit and has entered many triathlons, as well as the occasional games of squash, tennis and golf.

He has been the driver for the global commercialisation of guided wave NDT and monitoring methods and is the acknowledged world leader in the industrial application of this technology. David leads all aspects of the business and has responsibility for the strategic vision and direction of the company. He has gained a wealth of invaluable experience from partners and clients from every corner of the world, which is reflected in the diverse and talented group of people within GUL and the emphasis placed on team work, quality, customer needs and innovation. David enjoys football and follows his team avidly throughout the season, in addition he cycles and enjoys music and meeting people.

Tomasz is a Board Director of GUL who holds a Master and PhD in Mechanical Engineering, both from Imperial College London. His research at Imperial was related to the theoretical and experimental study of ultrasonic methods for testing adhesive joints. He was awarded SERC Fellowship for scientific achievements. Subsequent to this research Tomasz enjoyed a highly successful career in the City of London spanning over 25 years trading Money Market, Foreign Exchange, Interest Rates, Credit, derivative and structured products for some of the major global investment banks. In 2013, he joined GUL to focus on R&D, since when he has authored patents relating to the new quantitative short range guided wave technique and manufacture of the QSR1 system. Tomasz is involved with all aspects of the products and services within the company. His current area of responsibility is for research and development and he supervises a PhD student at Imperial College. His hobbies are wide ranging, but he particularly enjoys outdoor activities such as skiing, cycling and kayaking.

Peter received his B.E. (Mech) degree from University College Dublin, and his Ph.D. from Imperial College, London. He spent a number of years in research and managerial roles with engineering companies in Switzerland and Germany, and took an MBA at INSEAD in France. He now focuses his energies on founding and growing companies based on technologies developed in universities: his passion is seeing technologies with potential for impact successfully commercialised. As CEO, Peter led Permasense, a provider of sensor systems to oil refiners, from university laboratory to market leadership with sales in 27 countries, to sale to Emerson in six years. As chairman, he led the sale of Inflowmatix, another university spin out that provides sensor systems to water utilities, to Suez, securing the availability of the technology to Suez’s international customer base. Another GUL director whose football team has been more a lifelong passion than a reason for celebrations.

Neil has over 35 years of international operations, business and commercial experience in the oil industry. He has extensive experience of the downstream oil business and deep knowledge of refining and high hazard petrochemical operations. He has held a range of senior executive management positions including Mergers & Acquisitions Project Manager in the USA and Plant Manager at a petrochemical facility in Canada. He was Head of Engineering and Technology for BP’s Global Refining Business.After leaving BP Neil was Chief Executive Officer of a privately owned downstream oil company with refining and trading operations in Germany, London and Geneva.Neil holds a first-class degree in chemical engineering from Loughborough University and an MBA from Edinburgh University. He is a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Institute of Chemical Engineers.

Michael is a Non-Executive Director of GUL. He was one of the co-founders of the company in 1998, when it was formed as a spin-out from Imperial College London. He holds a BSc in Civil Engineering and MSc and PhD in Mechanical Engineering. He worked in engineering consultancy in WS Atkins from 1979 to 1989, then Imperial College London since 1989. He is currently Head of Department of Mechanical Engineering. His main research is in ultrasound NDE, especially guided waves, scattering, materials characterisation, and industrial applications. He pioneered the use of Finite Element methods for the simulation of NDE; this is now in widespread use worldwide for R&D for NDE. He created the guided wave software package “Disperse”, developed together with Dr Brian Pavlakovic, which is the internationally leading software tool for research in the properties of guided waves. He undertook and published multiple foundational research works in the propagation and properties of guided waves and their sensitivity to defects and features in pipelines. He has published more than 300 papers. He was elected Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2014 for his research contributions to NDE. He was winner of the Roy Sharpe prize in 2010, the Roentgen prize in 2012, and the SPIE Lifetime Achievement award in 2018.

Peter is a non-executive director of GUL and was one of the company founders. He received BSc and PhD degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Bristol. He then worked in industry before joining the Mechanical Engineering Department at Imperial College, London where he formed the NDT group and started its work on guided wave inspection. He served as head of the Mechanical Engineering department for 7 years and is now Engineering Associate Dean for Enterprise, encouraging technology transfer activity across the faculty. He was principal investigator of the UK Research Centre for NDE (RCNDE) from its formation in 2003 to 2020. He has published over 200 refereed journal papers in NDT and related fields. Peter is a fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and of the Royal Society and he is also a director of two startup companies in other fields. He shares the CEO’s enthusiasm for football, if not his choice of team.

Jackie has been in the NDT Industry for just over 20 years. Gaining knowledge in TOFD, Phased Array, MFL and basic UT instruments. Just over 5 years ago, she joined GUL, adding Guided Wave Testing and Monitoring to her portfolio. Her primary responsibility is to manage and expand the Global Distributor Network, while increasing awareness of Guided Wave technology, through GUL’s social media. Her role is to work with Distributors around the world to ensure that GUL’s customers’ experience nothing other than exceptional service. This is done by motivating and guiding Distributors on product knowledge, supporting them at local conferences and customer visits, thus enabling them to meet individual, and company objectives.She is also a Director (Programme Secretary) for the North Atlantic Section of the ASNT, This entails creating and managing an events programme, to bring together equipment manufacturers and users, to showcase new NDT technology to a wider audience. Promoting this through the NATL LinkedIn site and social media.She is also a strong advocate of women in the NDT industry and is on the ASNT committee for Women in NDT. Having travelled extensively all over the UK and overseas, has given her the ability to understand and appreciate different cultures and work practices. Jackie comments: “Women in NDT have an important role to play. They bring a different set of skills to the table. Women can demonstrate passion and enthusiasm, while taking command of a situation. This helps to make a work environment less authoritative and more cooperative, bringing a family-like feel to any team.”

Karan holds a master’s degree in Purchasing & Supply Chain Management and a PhD in Business Management at the Robert Gordons University. She has worked with Shell as a Buyer, GCA Energy as a Supply Manager and has 10 years of experience working with and supporting the oil and gas industry. Karan is a member of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply Chain Management. Since joining GUL in 2017 Karan has focused on global sales and purchasing with an emphasis on developing new strategies and markets for GUL’s products and services, particularly in West Africa and other emerging economies. She enjoys travelling, meeting people, photography and considers herself a bit of a chef.

Toby Anderson is Vice President of Sales for GUL Americas operating from the Houston, Texas office. He is responsible for overseeing North American sales activities and supporting client needs. He has over 15 years of technical sales and consulting experience in the oil and gas industry. Toby is a graduate of the University of Houston, Clear Lake with a bachelors of science degree in molecular biology. Through his professional experience he has gained a wide degree of experiences in sales, business development, business management, and product portfolio optimization. He is currently a member of ASNT.

Karunesh Chandran supports GUL’s growth in Southeast Asia by coordinating regional workshops and technical demonstrations of guided wave systems. Active in stakeholder engagement, his work helps bring GUL’s inspection and monitoring solutions to local asset owners and inspection teams.

Emilie joined GUL in June 2019, and has undertaken a variety of roles since joining. Her current role involves coordinating the delivery of our clients’ training requirements, organising courses and make sure inspectors are up to date with their certifications amongst other things. Emilie holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Sports Science and a Postgraduate Diploma in Sport Management from the Nice-Sophia Antipolis University, France. Emilie used to coach tennis and still plays competitively. She likes to challenge her co-worker to a game of squash, enjoys music, cycling and is a football fan.

Dr Mark Evans holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Imperial College London. His research at the NDE group at Imperial College was on the use of diffuse field measurements for acoustic emission. He joined Guided Ultrasonics Ltd in 2000 as a development engineer working on development projects on instrumentation and procedures for the inspection of pipe and rails. He was primarily responsible for training, technical support, product development and procedure writing until 2017. He has more than 20 years of experience in the guided wave field with outstanding knowledge of the theory and application of guided waves in NDT, and holds a Level 3 GW specialist. Dr Evans currently provides training for guided wave testing on GUL Training courses.

Ben has over forty years of NDT industry experience, extending from when he started in the Royal Australian Airforce as a technician, then working his way to be a specialist in many aspects of aircraft inspection. He developed into a trainer and supervisor while in the Airforce, before joining an NDT service and inspection company in 1999, that predominantly worked in the mining and oil and gas sectors. From 1999 his specialties were UT techniques such as TOFD and PA, he also worked with early PEC tools and other emerging UT techniques. In 2003 he was trained on the Wavemaker SE16 system, while working for an international inspection company. Ben achieved his GUL GWT Level 2 in 2006 and this was augmented in recent years by API and ASNT L3 qualifications; he also now holds a GULT GWT Level 3. Ben has a unique aptitude for training and mentoring inspection engineers and has excelled as a GULT trainer since 2009. He has taught over a 1,000 guided wave trainees over this period with an exceptional success and approval rating. Ben is highly knowledge of GUL technologies, products and applications, and takes pride in doing the best job possible in the support of GUL mission to improve the competency and expertise of guided wave inspectors.Ben has a keen interest in motor bikes, cars and fishing and a passion for his family and grandchildren.

Julian holds a diploma in Mechanical Engineering from The Institute of Technology Canberra, Australia. Since joining GUL in 2014 he has gained his level 3 in GWT. Julian is a training and support engineer who is involved with data auditing and global training with GUL. Julian enjoys music, playing his guitar, motorcycles and camping. He has a small hobby farm in Australia that keeps him busy when he’s not working.

German holds a Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgic Engineering from Universidad Libre of Colombia and a Post Graduate in Welding, ASTM member with more than 24 years of experience in NDT within the Oil and Gas industry Level 2 in disciplines UT, RT MT, VT and Guided Waves L2 since 2008, welding inspector and QA / QC in pipelines projects in Peru, Colombia and Mexico. German joined GUL since 2014 he works as a trainer L1P, L2XB and L2SP Courses for Latin America customers and interpretation audit support for worldwide GUL customers. His hobbies include Movies, music especially piano and cycling sports.

Cesar holds a master´s degree in Engineering and Materials Sciences from UENF, Brazil, and PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico of Lisbon, Portugal. His research for PhD was related to advanced Ultrasonics technologies applied to NDT. While working for an international NDT service company his responsibility was to develop and implement customized NDT solutions for different type of industries worldwide along more than 15 years. Meanwhile he also took part of several R&D and industrial projects in Europe, USA and Brazil.. Cesar joined GUL since 2015, after 10 years working with Guided Waves Technology (GWT). He is a level 3 GWT and is in charge to delivery training and technical support for GUL clients all over the word. Cesar is also associated Professor at Mechanical Engineering Department of UCAM University, Brazil. Cesar enjoys sports in general, watches any football game particularly if it his team is playing. He also enjoys travelling, meeting people, new places and cultures. His motto is “for a better world”.

Patricia Salas Gomez holds a degree in Electronics Engineering from Universidad de los Andes, Colombia, and has over ten years of experience in non-destructive testing (NDT) within the oil and gas industry. A former API 570 certified piping inspector, she also achieved Level 2 qualifications in UT, Phased Array, and Level 2 AA in Guided Wave Testing, with extensive field experience. Since joining GUL in 2017, Patricia works across business development, training, and marketing. She delivers guided wave training courses, supports clients in applying GUL solutions, and manages the company’s communications and outreach.

Dr Eli Leinov is the Head of Client Services. Eli joined GUL in 2018 as a senior development engineer and manager of training. Prior to joining GUL, he was a Post-Doctoral Research Associate at the NDE Group, department of Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College London. He worked on EPSRC-funded research on guided wave testing of buried and embedded pipes, as well as various NDE consultancy projects for global companies within the oil and gas, nuclear, mining and heavy machinery industries. Prior to the NDE group, he held a Post-Doctoral Research associate position at the Smart Wells Group at the department of Earth Sciences and Engineering at Imperial College London, where he worked on spontaneous electrical potentials for geophysical monitoring of water movement in the subsurface. Eli holds a PhD, MSc and BSc in Mechanical Engineering from Ben-Gurion University, Israel. His PhD research was in the field of hydrodynamic instabilities. Eli enjoys hiking in nature, reading and playing chess.

Robin holds a BSc in Physics from Warwick University, and an EngD in guided wave research from Imperial College London. Following this, Robin spent four years at BP contributing to the development of inspection technology globally throughout the company. Robin joined GUL in 2016, and is involved in the development of monitoring technologies as well as contributing to GUL’s training activities. He is currently working towards chartered engineer status with BINDT. Robin enjoys outdoor activities, and has a keen interest in skiing, climbing, tennis, and rowing.

Rhett O’Briant is the Vice President of Technical Sales and Support for GUL Americas. He has over 21 years of experience in natural gas gathering, transmission and storage operations with 18 years in pipeline corrosion integrity management and NDT. Rhett has co-developed and led pipeline corrosion direct assessment and direct examination programs involving advanced NDT methods including guided wave ultrasonics, automated UT, phased array and laser scanning technology. Since joining GUL in 2022, he has focused on regulated and non-regulated midstream technical support services within North America. Rhett holds a Bachelor of Science degree in industrial technology from Southwestern Oklahoma State University and is a Certified Technology Manager by The Association of Technology, Management, and Applied Engineering (ATMAE). He is a member of ASNT and holds NACE/AMPP certifications in cathodic protection, internal corrosion, and pipeline corrosion integrity management (PCIM).

Natalia has more than 15 years of experience working as the main point of contact (POC) for several companies. She joined GUL on June 2021 as the Administrator for the Rental and Repair departments, where she has made it her mission to address and solve customer questions efficiently.Natalia is from Argentina, likes to read, enjoys all kinds of outdoor activities, and learned to love cycling since she came to London. She is also very passionate about travelling, having visited more than 40 countries and lived in 3 of them.
